.Northa Fields Allotments is situated in the heart of Tupton, Derbyshire, and is proudly run by the community, for the community.

For us, an allotment is about much more than simply growing fruit and vegetables. It’s about getting outdoors, meeting people, sharing ideas, learning from each other and creating somewhere that friends and families can enjoy spending time together.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener who knows the difference between twenty varieties of tomato, or someone who has only just discovered that potatoes actually grow underground, you’ll be made to feel welcome.

There’s no expectation that having an allotment means you suddenly have to give up your entire life and move into a shed.

If you’ve only got one day a week to spend on your plot, that’s absolutely fine. If you’re one of the hardcore plot holders who turns up seven days a week, knows every weed personally and starts worrying about the courgettes while lying in bed at night, that’s fine too.

How much time you spend at Northa Fields is entirely up to you.

What matters is enjoying your plot, looking after it and being part of the friendly community we’re continuing to build.

If you’re not currently a plot holder but fancy having a go, we’d love to hear from you.

You don’t need years of gardening experience, expensive equipment or a degree in vegetable science. Everybody has to start somewhere, and one of the great things about allotments is the amount you learn simply by talking to the people around you.

Use the Contact Us form on our website and one of our members will get back to you with information about current plot availability. If we’re currently full, we can also let you know about plots that may be becoming vacant in the near future.

Allotment plots do occasionally become available, so it’s always worth getting in touch and registering your interest.

See What Our Plot Holders Have Achieved

Have a look through the photographs on our website and you’ll see some of the fantastic work our plot holders have put into Northa Fields.

Every plot is different, and that’s exactly how it should be.

Some people concentrate on traditional vegetables, while others enjoy growing fruit, flowers or experimenting with something completely different. Some plots are beautifully organised and look as though every carrot has been issued with its own postcode. Others are a little more relaxed — but that’s all part of allotment life.

It’s also worth remembering that gardening is never completely within our control.

The unprecedented hot weather we’ve experienced has made growing particularly challenging. Prolonged heat and dry conditions inevitably affect what can be planted, what survives and what eventually makes it onto the dinner table.

But it certainly hasn’t stopped the Northa Fields community from getting stuck in.

Our plot holders have continued watering, planting, experimenting, helping each other and doing their best with whatever the British weather decides to throw at us. Sometimes you get a basket full of vegetables. Sometimes you spend three months nurturing something only for a slug to eat it the night before you planned to pick it.

That’s allotment life.

More Than Just Growing Vegetables

One of the most important things about Northa Fields is the community behind it.

Allotments can bring together people who might otherwise never have met. Different ages, different backgrounds and completely different levels of gardening experience can all end up chatting over a fence, swapping advice, sharing spare plants or trying to work out who has grown the biggest pumpkin.

There’s something particularly special about that.

At a time when so much of life is spent looking at screens, an allotment gives us somewhere to put the phone down, get outside and actually talk to people.

It can be peaceful when you want some time to yourself and social when you fancy some company.

There’s no pressure to be the best gardener on the site. There isn’t a trophy waiting for whoever produces the straightest carrot.

Northa Fields is about having a go.

It’s about learning.

It’s about getting things wrong occasionally.

And, hopefully, it’s about growing something you can proudly take home at the end of the day.

You don’t have to be an expert gardener.

You don’t need to be here every day.

You don’t even have to know what you’re doing when you first arrive — most of us are still learning something every year.

You just need a willingness to have a go, respect the people around you and enjoy being part of the community.
